Liverpool have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Spanish coach Andoni Iraola to become their new head coach, following the recent departure of Arne Slot. This development was confirmed by sources on Tuesday night, indicating that Iraola is the leading candidate to take over the managerial role at Anfield.

Andoni Iraola, aged 43, is currently finishing his contract with Bournemouth, which expires on June 30th. He has been closely linked with Liverpool after Arne Slot's exit was announced the previous Saturday. The negotiations for Iraola's appointment have been overseen by Liverpool's sporting director, Richard Hughes, who has a prior working relationship with the coach. Hughes was responsible for bringing Iraola to Bournemouth in the summer of 2023, where he succeeded Gary O’Neil as head coach.

If the agreement is finalised as expected, Iraola is set to sign a two-year contract with Liverpool, mirroring the length of his previous deals. His tenure at Bournemouth has been marked by steady progress, with the club finishing 12th, 9th, and then 6th in the Premier League over three seasons. Notably, Iraola guided Bournemouth to their first-ever qualification for the Europa League, a significant achievement in the club's history.

Arne Slot’s time at Liverpool began promisingly with a league title in the 2024/25 season. However, the following campaign saw a downturn in results, with the team failing to secure any trophies and facing uncertainty over Champions League qualification. This ultimately led to Slot’s dismissal, opening the door for a new managerial appointment.

Liverpool is expected to make an official announcement regarding Iraola’s appointment before the end of the week, pending the completion of formalities. The club will be looking to build on its recent successes and address the challenges faced in the previous season under the new coach’s leadership.

Looking ahead, Liverpool’s next steps will involve preparing for the upcoming Premier League season under Iraola’s guidance. The club’s performance in domestic and European competitions will be closely watched as the new head coach seeks to establish his philosophy and maintain Liverpool’s competitive standing. Additionally, the transfer market activity and squad adjustments may reflect the new coach’s vision for the team moving forward.
