FIFA and Gianni Infantino Face Multimillion-Euro Lawsuit Over Iran’s World Cup Elimination
FIFA and Gianni Infantino are challenged by an 850 million euro lawsuit after Iran's World Cup exit, citing alleged discriminatory treatment and a disputed VAR decision that impacted Iran's qualification chances.

FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, are currently facing a multimillion-euro lawsuit valued at around 850 million euros related to the elimination of the Iranian national football team from the World Cup. The legal action was initiated in the Federal Court of Boston by Lotfollah Kaveh Afrasiabi, an Iranian-American citizen, who filed the complaint on behalf of approximately 91 million Iranians.
This lawsuit centers on allegations of "blatant discrimination" by FIFA during the tournament. The key issue highlighted in the complaint involves a disallowed goal scored by Iranian defender Shojae Khalilzadeh in a match against Egypt. The goal was ruled offside after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, a decision that, according to the plaintiff, prevented Iran from securing a crucial victory and advancing to the next stage of the competition.
Lotfollah Kaveh Afrasiabi, an international affairs analyst and former Harvard University professor with experience as an advisor to Iran’s nuclear negotiation team, argues that there is "clear and undeniable evidence" showing that Iran’s elimination was the result of an unjust VAR decision. Beyond the disputed goal, the lawsuit also accuses FIFA of failing to provide equitable conditions for the Iranian team’s preparation. Specific grievances include travel restrictions imposed on the team, the relocation of their training base to Mexico, and the denial of visas to 11 members of the Iranian delegation.
The complaint emphasizes the emotional impact of these events on Iranian supporters worldwide, stating that both Iranian and Iranian-American fans suffered significant distress due to what is described as discriminatory treatment against their national team. Iran’s team notably finished the group stage unbeaten, drawing all three of their matches, which adds to the sense of controversy surrounding their elimination.
As of now, FIFA has not issued an official response to the lawsuit. The case raises important questions about the use of VAR technology, the fairness of tournament logistics, and the broader governance of international football competitions. The outcome could have implications for FIFA’s policies and its handling of future World Cup tournaments.
Looking ahead, the situation remains fluid. FIFA’s next steps, whether in terms of legal defense or potential reforms, will be closely watched by football fans and stakeholders. Meanwhile, the Iranian national team and its supporters await clarity on the matter as they reflect on their World Cup campaign and prepare for upcoming international fixtures.
