Sporting Gary Rowett’s Team Faces Serious Risk of Relegation to English Third Tier
Ten years after Leicester City's unlikely Premier League triumph, Gary Rowett's side struggles in the Championship, risking relegation to the third division after a difficult run of form.

On May 2nd, a significant anniversary will mark ten years since one of the most extraordinary achievements in Premier League history: Leicester City’s unexpected league title. However, the club currently managed by Gary Rowett faces a starkly different reality, as it risks relegation to the third tier of English football.
Leicester City, the Foxes, who stunned the football world with their 2016 Premier League championship, have experienced considerable fluctuations in recent years. After being relegated to the Championship in 2023, they secured an immediate return to the top flight but suffered another relegation last season. Now, the club finds itself in a precarious position that could see it drop further into League One, the third division of English football.
This troubling situation was underscored this past Friday when Rowett’s team, featuring former Sporting player Fatawu, drew 2-2 at home against Preston North End in the 40th round of Championship fixtures. The result leaves them in 22nd place, the first position below the relegation line, level on points with Oxford United. Just above them is Portsmouth, who hold a one-point advantage and have a game in hand, potentially increasing the gap.
With only six matches remaining in the season, the Foxes face a challenging schedule that includes fixtures against already relegated Sheffield Wednesday, Swansea City (managed by Vítor Matos), Portsmouth, Hull City, Millwall, and Blackburn Rovers. To avoid the significant setback of a second consecutive relegation, the team must improve its form substantially.
Leicester’s recent results have been concerning, having won only one of their last fifteen Championship matches. This poor run has contributed heavily to their current vulnerable position as the season nears its conclusion.
Looking ahead, the club’s immediate focus will be on securing crucial points in the remaining fixtures to maintain their Championship status. The outcome of these matches will not only affect the club’s league standing but also have wider implications for the squad, management, and supporters, as they aim to avoid the financial and competitive challenges associated with dropping into the third tier.
