The Netherlands’ defeat to Morocco in the Round of 32 triggered a series of attacks directed at some players. The match, played in Monterrey, Mexico, ended in a 1-1 draw, with the decision going to a penalty shootout, where the Dutch lost 3-2. According to the KNVB, the three players who missed their penalties — Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville — were subjected to “racist and discriminatory” insults on social media after the match. In a statement released this Friday, the federation emphasized its firm stance against such behavior. “Unfortunately, it is never possible to be exhaustive in detecting and sanctioning all racist reactions, but the KNVB wants to send a very clear signal: there are limits, and those who cross them expose themselves to consequences,” the statement read. The reaction extended to the highest levels of government. Prime Minister Rob Jetten described the events as “unacceptable” during a press conference. “At one moment, they are our boys, and we are supposedly all indifferent to skin color when someone wears an orange jersey. But as soon as someone misses a penalty, insults come from all sides,” he lamented. The Dutch government leader also expressed his expectation that the authorities would act exemplary. “I assume that the Public Prosecution Service will indeed initiate proceedings to set a very clear example,” he stated, adding that discrimination and racism continue to be “common currency” in the Netherlands.
