Leonardo Jardim won the Campeonato Carioca in his debut for Flamengo, just four days after taking over as head coach. He defeated Fluminense 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time, securing his first trophy in Brazil. In the press conference after the match, Jardim made a point to share the credit for the achievement with his predecessor, Filipe Luís, who had been dismissed during the week. "It’s very good to win a title in Brazil, something that hadn’t happened to me in my career yet. (…) A big hug to Filipe (Luís), because he built this team, even though he left," said the coach, who led Cruzeiro last year. The Portuguese coach highlighted the collaboration he received since his arrival, in a context of pressure due to Filipe Luís's departure and the instability surrounding the football director, also Portuguese, José Boto. "In four days, I had a lot of collaboration from the entire Flamengo staff and also from the players, who were fully engaged and open," he explained. "Whoever works at Flamengo has to play to win," he said. Regarding the strategy for the final, Jardim revealed that the focus was on defensive consistency. "I sought to nullify Fluminense better, especially compared to the last games. We were consistent in defense. In the offensive process, we still had some difficulties," he analyzed, expressing satisfaction with the team's attitude. When asked about squad management, the coach emphasized the importance of having several quality options, like Paquetá and Arrascaeta, to face a season that could reach 78 games. "We need to have two players per position. I don’t believe Flamengo is a team with just 11 players. Happy is the coach who has two players of that quality," he commented, referring to the need to manage effort to avoid injuries. Jardim, who was already familiar with the intensity of the Brazilian calendar, advocates for squad rotation as essential. "I know about the load that exists here in Brazil. That’s why it’s important for Flamengo to have a group that allows rotation so we don’t have injuries and can be competitive in every game," he concluded. The coach highlighted the physical demands at the club, stating that "at Flamengo, you always have to play at your maximum" and that the club "requires maintaining a consistently winning team." This need for constant performance leads to significant wear and tear, justifying the search for new solutions for the squad. The possibility of signing a new player was acknowledged to avoid future adaptations. "If, in the future, we can bring in a player that allows us not to make adaptations anymore, we will do it," he explained, mentioning the fatigue of forward Pedro: "When I spoke in the second half, he was already experiencing muscle fatigue." The coach praised the player's attitude and commitment but acknowledged the physical limitations. When asked about the duo Samuel Lino and Cebolinha, the coach expressed satisfaction with the options he has for the wing. "I’m happy to have both. Cebolinha came on for Lino and maintained the intensity," he stated. The coach emphasized the importance of wingers in his system, who must "defend and attack," and valued the internal competition: "In the future, Cebolinha will be a starter and Lino will come in… We have the capacity and satisfaction of having these two wingers." Regarding Cebolinha's contractual situation, whose contract ends at the end of the year, he referred the matter to the management.
