Just two days before the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup, thousands of protesters blocked, this Tuesday, the main access avenue to the Azteca Stadium, stage of the opening match between Mexico and South Africa.
According to the AFP news agency, the protest, which is part of a series of demonstrations by teachers, led to the mobilization of thousands of police officers in the stadium area. Concrete barriers were also erected to contain the advance of protesters.
Mexico City has been the scene of several protests in recent days, organized by a dissident wing of the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE). The union demands wage increases, changes to the pension system and changes to educational policy.
