UEFA, the European Club Association (ECA), and Real Madrid have reached a historic agreement that puts an end to the Super League project and all associated legal disputes. The understanding, which restores unity in European football, was achieved after two months of intense and private negotiations. The official announcement came this Tuesday, after the final details of the statement were agreed upon between Madrid and Brussels. However, the realization of the agreement was in doubt until the last moment, with pessimism prevailing the day before regarding the possibility of an announcement during the 50th UEFA Congress. Nasser Al Khelaifi, president of the ECA and member of the UEFA Executive Committee, as well as President of the current Champions League winner PSG, played a key role as a mediator between the parties. In exclusive statements to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the leader expressed his delight with the outcome. "I am proud and very happy. I want to thank everyone, all the parties involved in this historic agreement. To the president of UEFA, who does so much every day for European football, the smartest and humblest leader. And, of course, to Florentino Pérez, a very elegant and intelligent man, he is a visionary," said Al Khelaifi. The ECA president, who represents 820 European clubs, emphasized that in this agreement there are no losers, only winners. "If anyone says or thinks that today Florentino Pérez 'lost', they are foolish and know absolutely nothing about football. The most important thing here is that we all win, no one loses. Football wins, which is what we all wanted. Today UEFA wins, Real Madrid wins, ECA wins, and, most importantly, football wins. The war was leading us nowhere," he explained. Al Khelaifi also praised the stance of the Real Madrid president during the process. "I believe that today President Pérez is an even greater and better person, as he led Real Madrid to do what benefits European football the most. Thank you very much, truly, and I thank him for trusting me," he said, extending his thanks to Behdad Eghbali of Chelsea and Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, whose "great courage and leadership" also deserved recognition. The ECA leader admitted that, despite believing "in this peace process for a long time," uncertainty about the agreement remained until the end. "This very morning we did not know if it would materialize or not. We were talking, with our differences, but always with the willingness to reach an agreement, thinking about collective interests," he revealed. With Barcelona's return to the ECA family already confirmed, Al Khelaifi is now looking to the future. "That Barcelona returns to the ECA family is fantastic news. Now we are working to ensure that Real Madrid returns completely, as we all start a new and bright chapter for club football," he concluded, mentioning that the agreement will lead to improvements that, for now, he prefers to keep secret.
