Spain Employs Advanced Cooling Technology to Combat Heat at 2026 World Cup

Spain's national football team is adopting advanced cooling technology to manage the intense heat conditions they face during the 2026 World Cup in the United States. This approach is part of their preparation as one of the tournament favourites.

The team, known as La Roja, is utilising the new CLIMACOOL SYSTEM developed by adidas during their training sessions. This system includes specially designed cooling vests and boots that help reduce body and foot temperature, aiming to improve player comfort and performance under challenging environmental conditions.

The cooling vests contain a special gel that is frozen prior to use and then worn over the players' jerseys. As the gel melts, it cools key areas such as the torso, abdomen, and back, effectively lowering body temperature. Complementing the vests, the players also wear cooling boots embedded with the same gel technology. These boots are designed to reduce overheating and swelling of the feet, lowering foot temperature by approximately two degrees within seven minutes, which can provide significant relief during intense training or match situations.

Spain, who were crowned world champions in 2010 in South Africa, are preparing to begin their 2026 World Cup campaign with a Group H match against Cape Verde in Atlanta. The use of this cooling technology could be a strategic advantage as they face the physical demands of playing in hot climates.
