José Mourinho is once again at the center of a major controversy. Shortly after scoring the only goal in Real Madrid's victory over Benfica, Vinícius Júnior claimed to have heard a racist comment from Prestianni, which led the players to leave the pitch, following UEFA protocols. Instead of showing solidarity, Mourinho suggested that the Brazilian's exuberant celebration of the goal was the cause of the hostility. Following the Portuguese coach's words, an anti-racism charity, Kick It Out, expressed support for the Brazilian and accused the Benfica coach of 'psychological manipulation' of the opponent, through a statement on social media this Wednesday, with Ian Herbert, a journalist from the Daily Mail, agreeing with this opinion. 'When someone reports discrimination in football, or anywhere else, the first priority is that they are heard and feel supported. Focusing on Vinícius Jr.’s goal celebration or the history of the club [Eusébio], instead of acknowledging the report, is a form of psychological manipulation,' the organization began, indirectly addressing Mourinho. 'This approach not only harms the affected person but also sends the wrong message to others around the world who may have gone through similar situations. Football leaders have a crucial role in setting standards, and moments like this require responsible leadership that reinforces respect, inclusion, and accountability. We look forward to a thorough investigation into this incident, with appropriate accountability associated with the outcome,' they added, calling for consequences. When asked if the Real Madrid player had incited the throwing of bottles by home fans, the Portuguese coach was emphatic: 'Yes, I believe so. Unfortunately, he was not content with scoring that amazing goal. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate respectfully. I told him that the greatest figure in the history of this club was black. The last thing this club is, is racist,' Mourinho stated, referring to Eusébio.
