UEFA Imposes Strict Sanctions on Ferencváros After Europa League Match Against SC Braga

The UEFA Appeals Committee has taken decisive action against Hungarian club Ferencváros after their UEFA Europa League match against Portuguese side SC Braga on March 12. The disciplinary measures come in response to multiple breaches of UEFA’s strict regulations, particularly concerning racist behavior by fans and the use of pyrotechnic devices during the fixture.

One of the most significant sanctions involves the activation of a previously suspended penalty related to discriminatory conduct. As a result, UEFA has ordered the immediate closure of section B2 of Ferencváros’ stadium for their next European home game. This step demonstrates UEFA’s ongoing commitment to combating racism and promoting a safe, inclusive environment in football stadiums across Europe.

In addition to the stadium closure, Ferencváros has been fined 20,000 euros for new incidents of discriminatory behavior observed during the match. UEFA has also imposed a suspended sanction that would close 500 additional seats across sections C4 and C5 if further violations occur within the next year. This suspended measure serves as a warning to the club and its supporters to maintain proper conduct moving forward.

Beyond the issues of discrimination, Ferencváros was also penalized for the use of pyrotechnic materials during the game. UEFA levied an extra fine of 11,250 euros in response to this breach of stadium safety regulations. The governing body maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding pyrotechnics due to the potential risks they pose to fans and players alike.

From a sporting perspective, Ferencváros secured a 2-0 victory in the first leg against SC Braga. However, the Portuguese side overturned this deficit in the return leg at the Estádio Municipal de Braga, progressing to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The sanctions imposed on Ferencváros highlight the challenges the club faces both on and off the pitch as they seek to improve their behavior and reputation in future European competitions.
