Botafogo is in the market for a goalkeeper, targeting Matheus Magalhães, who is currently playing for Red Star Belgrade in Serbia. The Rio de Janeiro club aims to sign the 33-year-old Brazilian on a permanent basis. The need to strengthen the goalkeeping position arises following recent performances by Neto and Léo Linck, which have faced criticism. Behind the scenes at Botafogo, according to information initially reported by ESPN and confirmed by Globo Esporte, there is confidence that the transfer will be successful, despite the goalkeeper being under contract with the Serbian club until June 2027. Matheus, who was trained at América Mineiro, joined SC Braga in 2014. Over ten and a half years, he represented the Braga team in 372 matches and won the Taça de Portugal and the Taça da Liga twice each. In January 2025, after expressing a desire to leave the Minho club, he was loaned to Ajax, then coached by Francesco Farioli, before moving to Serbia on a permanent basis last summer. This is not the first time a Brazilian club has tried to secure his services. In 2025, Matheus Magalhães was close to signing with Grêmio, having reached an agreement on salary and contract duration, according to Brazilian media. This season, the player has made 37 appearances for Red Star Belgrade and has already faced SC Braga, as well as FC Porto, in the Europa League, matches that the Serbians ultimately lost.
