Maradona’s shirt Diego Maradona – Maradona’s shirt sold for 400 thousand euros in Paris

The shirt worn by Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Belgium was auctioned this Saturday for 400,000 euros, setting a possible record in France. At the same event, Harald Schumacher’s shirt from the controversial game against France in 1982 was sold for 35 thousand euros.

Key details

The Millon auction house organized an event in Paris, at salle VV, where relics from the 1982 and 1986 World Cups were auctioned, including pieces from the personal collections of Maxime Bossis and Jean-Marie Pfaff. The former French defender and the former Belgian goalkeeper were present at the auction.

The centerpiece of the event was the shirt Maradona wore in the 2–0 victory over Belgium, in which he scored both goals. With an initial estimate of between 350,000 and 400,000 euros, the shirt was sold for top dollar, setting what is believed to be a record for the sale of a football shirt at auction in France.

At the end of that game, the Argentine star offered the shirt to Jean-Marie Pfaff, then Bayern goalkeeper, in exchange for his left boot. In 2016, Maradona himself autographed the piece. Another highlight was a Johan Cruyff shirt, obtained by Pfaff on his debut for the Belgian national team against the Netherlands in May 1976, which sold for 130 thousand euros, far exceeding the estimate of 30 to 40 thousand euros.

Also highly anticipated, the famous red shirt worn by German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher in the 1982 World Cup semi-final against France was sold for 35 thousand euros. The equipment, used in the game in which Schumacher committed an attack on Patrick Battiston that was not sanctioned, was recovered by French goalkeeper Jean-Luc Etorri and had an estimate of between 12 thousand and 15 thousand euros.

From Maxime Bossis’ collection, the most valuable item was the Soviet Union’s Vassili Rats jersey, worn in the 1986 World Cup first round game against France (1-1). The Dynamo Kiev defender scored the Soviet goal in that match. The shirt, valued at between 1000 and 1500 euros, was sold for 6700 euros.
