World Cup The Uzbekistan national team coach, Fabio Cannavaro, acknowledged Portugal’s strength but assured that his team, making its World Cup debut, will not just defend and has the means to surprise in the second match of Group K of the 2026 World Cup. In the preview of the match, which takes place this Tuesday in Houston, the Italian coach described the Portuguese team as a tough opponent. “We are talking about a match against one of the best teams in the World Cup. They have some of the best midfielders in the world and one of the best forwards in the history of football. We will have to play primarily as a team. If we are not cohesive and united, we have no chance,” stated Fabio Cannavaro on Monday. After the compliments, Cannavaro expressed confidence and issued warnings. “When we play focused and compact, we can face any team. We will not just defend. We have our weapons to score and create opportunities,” said the 52-year-old coach, emphasizing, however, that “one mistake at this level can be fatal.” Analyzing the Portuguese team, Cannavaro highlighted Cristiano Ronaldo’s versatility. “He scores in any situation, from free kicks, counter-attacks, even from corners,” he noted. However, the Uzbek coach made it clear that the danger does not only lie with the captain: “Portugal is not just Ronaldo. They have great players, even on the bench. It is a team that likes to have the ball, to control the game.” When asked about a possible man-marking of Cristiano Ronaldo by center-back Khusanov, a Manchester City player, Cannavaro opted for mystery: “I will think about that tonight,” he replied with a smile. The Italian coach revealed that he will try to exploit any potential anxiety from the Portuguese, stemming from the draw with the DR Congo in their opener and the need to score points. “We know that the longer the game goes on, the more nervous they will become, and we can play with that,” he confessed. The match between Portugal and Uzbekistan is scheduled for 6 PM, again at NRG Stadium in Houston, and will be officiated by Moroccan referee Jalad Jayed.
