The semifinal match of the second round of the Amazonense Championship between Manaus and Parintins was marked by a controversial incident in the final moments, which ultimately impacted the outcome of the match. Manaus was leading (1-0) at the Carlos Zamith Stadium when, in the 86th minute, referee Leonardo Chaul Paixão awarded a penalty for handball in the area. The only problem is that the hand that stopped the shot from Parintins was that of the goalkeeper, thus within the rules. In the Amazonense Championship, the referee awarded a penalty to Parintins after the Manaus goalkeeper handled the ball inside his own area (rsssss). There was no VAR in this case. Referee Fail ❌ pic.twitter.com/RBsowux4Wp In a game that did not have VAR — video assistance is only available in finals, not in the knockout phase — the match official was still called by the assistants but maintained his decision. Willian Anicete converted the penalty in the 90+3', and the game was decided in a penalty shootout, favoring Parintins (5-4). The controversy escalated in the words of Manaus president Luis Mitoso, who criticized the Amazonense Football Federation (FAF). "This is an event that will be negatively marked in the history of Amazon football. I believe that the federation president, Mr. Ednailson Rozenha [vice-president of CBF], should take action. If he does not, he will be complicit with what is happening. I hope he acts like a sportsman and as a federation president who represents me," said the official. "Because what happened today was a blatant robbery. An irresponsible act by a professional who is not qualified to officiate. I want to congratulate Nacional for hiring a VAR to improve the performance of these referees," he continued, referring to one of the semifinalists from the other match, who decided to cover the costs of operating the equipment in the previous round against Amazonas. "I believed in the refereeing. My mistake. I gave credit and was horrendously robbed today. All this confusion, all this problem that is happening has a name, Amazonense Football Federation. They are responsible for all this," he defended.
