Joey Barton, former player and manager, was detained for physical assaults at a golf club in Merseyside, Liverpool, reported the Daily Mail. The victim was treated at a hospital for facial and rib injuries. The ex-player, now 43 years old, has played for clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle, Marseille, Rangers, Burnley, and Queens Park Rangers, and also has one cap for the England national team. He began his coaching career in 2018 and has managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. A spokesperson for Merseyside police told the Daily Mail: "We can confirm that two people were arrested following reports of an assault in Huyton on Sunday, March 8. At around 9 PM, emergency services were called after reports that a man had been assaulted near the Huyton and Prescott Golf Club. The victim was taken to the hospital for assessment of facial and rib injuries. A 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old man were arrested. They are in custody for questioning by detectives." According to the newspaper, the argument started inside the golf club establishment. Subsequently, a weapon from outside was involved, and it is believed that Barton may have acted in self-defense. Barton is a rebel in English football and has accumulated controversies during and after his playing career. In March 2025, he was convicted of assault, receiving a suspended prison sentence of 12 weeks. More recently, he became embroiled in controversy with Eniola Aluko over comments made on TV.
