"The Brasileirão fires more coaches per year than the Premier League does every five editions," "a study of 126 leagues ranks the Série A and Série B of the Brasileirão in the top 10 for the most dismissals," "the lifespan of a coach in Brazil is four times shorter than in European elite leagues"… A quick online search of press headlines is enough to prove that Brasileirão and dismissal go hand in hand. But another headline from 2023 explained that "on average, coaches do not survive four games without a win." Yet in 2026, it seems they don't even survive winning games. The dismissal of Martín Anselmi by Botafogo is the latest case: the former FC Porto coach was let go after a significant 2-1 victory at Red Bull Bragantino and just 90 days in charge. Since the John Textor era, the American owner of the club, only Luís Castro has managed the team for more than a year. The Portuguese coach eventually left on his own accord, heading to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, just as his compatriot Artur Jorge, after winning the Brasileirão and Libertadores, decided to move to Al Rayyan in Qatar. Bruno Lage and Renato Paiva were dismissed after 88 and 123 days, respectively. Before Anselmi, the international community was shocked by Filipe Luís's departure from Flamengo after a state victory of 8-0 over Madureira. The last game for the Brasileirão was a win in the derby against Botafogo. In between, the young coach lost the South American and Brazilian Super Cups, but it was thought he would have credit for the Brasileirão and Libertadores victories two months prior. He did not. Hernán Crespo was also fired from São Paulo while leading the Brasileirão against expectations, despite a win in the previous round. He lost, in the meantime, the semi-final of the Paulistão to rival Palmeiras… In Remo, Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio left after a draw with Internacional but a defeat in the Paraense to rival Paysandu. In Belo Horizonte, Tite and Jorge Sampaoli also lost their respective positions at Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro right after draws: both 3-3, with Raposa against Vasco da Gama and Galo against Remo. Of the eight dismissed, only two, or 25%, left after losses: Fernando Diniz at Vasco and Juan Carlos Vojvoda at Santos. So, attention to the four Portuguese coaches in the league: beware of victories.
