De Zerbi Roberto De Zerbi – Marseille announces De Zerbi’s departure in the middle of the night

Marseille, currently in 4th place in Ligue 1, issued a statement early this morning announcing the departure of head coach Roberto De Zerbi. In his last match in charge of OM, the Marseille team suffered a heavy defeat against rivals PSG in the league, losing 5-0, and this setback was fatal for the coach. Roberto De Zerbi had been the coach of Marseille since the summer of 2024 and failed to win any trophies. "Olympique de Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi, head coach of the first team, have mutually agreed to end their collaboration. After discussions among all members of the club's management – the owner, the president, the sporting director, and the coach – a change in the technical command of the first team was decided. This was a difficult collective decision, made after careful consideration, in the interest of the club, to address the sporting challenges at the end of the season," reads the statement issued during the night. The club thanked Roberto De Zerbi "for his dedication, commitment, professionalism, and seriousness, which were evident, particularly in the team's qualification for second place in the 2024-2025 season." His departure, however, did not come as a surprise, as rumors were already circulating on Tuesday that the coach was considering leaving. According to RMC Sport, De Zerbi led Tuesday's training session, but discussions with the working group and management indicated a separation, as the Italian coach remained "deeply affected" and "devastated" by the recent "humiliating" results and the lack of attitude from the squad. Roberto De Zerbi was appointed to the position in the summer of 2024 after stints at Darfo Boario, Foggia, Palermo, Benevento, Sassuolo, Shakhtar, and Brighton. He has only one trophy in his coaching career: the Ukrainian Super Cup, won in the 2021-2022 season. As a player, he played throughout his career for various Italian teams such as Milan, Padova, Monza, Como, Catania, Brescia, and Napoli, but he is especially known to the Romanian public for his time at CFR Cluj. At the Gruia team, he made 30 appearances, scored 8 goals, provided 6 assists, and won two league titles and one Romanian Cup.
