In preparation for the 2026 World Cup, Diogo Dalot gave an interview to Sport TV and discussed the period in which he was trained with Ruben Amorim. The 27-year-old full-back highlighted the importance of his compatriot’s time at Manchester United which allowed the club to improve, finish third in the Premier League and return to play in the UEFA Champions League.
Key details
«I am very grateful for everything he did for the club. He will undoubtedly be one of the most important coaches in all the years I was there and it’s hard to believe because the results on the field didn’t happen. But everything that happened behind, everything you fought for, every day, I managed to have this daily perception. Understanding what he tried to do every day at that club, and implementing it, was fundamental, because he ended up changing a lot of things behind the scenes, which people didn’t see”, he began by saying, admitting that he would have liked the story to have been different.
«There are changes that remain, yes. Obviously I would have preferred him to have stayed, and to have won more games, because he is an excellent coach, but football dictated that. He will look back on that period as an important page because he represented a huge club and did what he could. But unfortunately in football, sometimes, if you give everything, the results end up not showing up», he explained.
On the other hand, Dalot also commented on FC Porto’s championship win, highlighting Froholdt as a key signing. — He was without a doubt the player who impressed me the most, especially in his ability to add intensity to the game, to react to loss. He was a player who constantly didn’t stop, that’s something that everyone noticed about him, and it was a player’s representation of FC Porto. This ability to not stop, the first thought is always about reacting to a loss, or when you win the ball, move forward. It was a very intelligent signing and one that helped the team a lot”, praised the young Dane.
Dalot also credited Villas-Boas and company for two big transfer markets. “So they added players with some experience and quality too. Players up front that we haven’t seen in a long time, players playing one on one all the time, we hardly even think about anymore. Missing one or two moves, they continue to attack their opponents. It’s what every fan wants to see and especially a team like FC Porto wants to go forward and win games, that was important for the club”, he concluded.
