The group is led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia and has already made a provisional offer of €1.58 billion to Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s current owner. Bhatia’s consortium values Liverpool at approximately €5.27 billion, a figure higher than the valuation of Manchester United when Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired 25% of the club two years ago. To finance the operation, the group is negotiating with other potential investors, with Jeff Bezos being one of the names on the table. Sources close to the process indicate that if the deal goes through, Bezos, whose personal fortune is estimated at around €225 billion according to Forbes, would receive a shareholder stake in Liverpool. It is worth noting that this would not be the billionaire’s first foray into the sports world, as he has previously explored purchasing NFL teams like the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, although without success. However, this would mark his debut in an investment in the Premier League. A spokesperson for FSG has already confirmed the negotiations, stating that “an investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.” In 2023, FSG had already sold a 3% stake in the club to the American private equity firm Dynasty Equity. To facilitate his investment in Liverpool, Amit Bhatia transferred his shares in QPR to fellow owner Ruben Gnanalingam on Tuesday. It is believed that Bhatia has already secured financial backing from his father-in-law, Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, whose family fortune is estimated at around €26.9 billion. Jeff Bezos is currently the executive chairman of Amazon, having stepped down as CEO five years ago. Under his leadership, the company has diversified its entertainment investments and acquired various sports rights for its streaming service.
