This glossary explains common football terms used in news, analysis and transfer coverage. It is designed for readers who want clear definitions without tactical jargon getting in the way.

xG

Expected goals, or xG, estimates the quality of chances a team or player creates. It does not tell the full story of a match, but it can help explain whether a result matched the chances.

VAR

Video Assistant Referee is used to review specific decisions such as goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity. VAR can correct major errors, but it also creates debate about interpretation and delays.

Release Clause

A release clause is a contract figure that can allow a player to leave if another club meets the stated amount and the contractual conditions are satisfied.

Loan

A loan allows a player to join another club temporarily. Some loans include an option or obligation to buy, which can turn the move into a permanent transfer later.

FFP and PSR
