Mauricio Pochettino on PSG's Tactical Challenge Integrating Messi, Mbappé, and Neymar

Mauricio Pochettino has opened up about the tactical challenges he encountered while managing Paris Saint-Germain's formidable attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar during the 2021/22 season. The Argentine coach highlighted how the distinct playing styles of these three world-class forwards made it difficult to find a cohesive approach that maximised their combined potential.

PSG, competing in Ligue 1 and other domestic competitions, assembled one of football's most talented attacking units with Messi, Mbappé, and Neymar. However, as Pochettino explained in an interview with The Overlap, the differing football philosophies of Messi and Mbappé in particular created a tactical dilemma. Messi preferred a slower build-up from deeper positions, focusing on intricate passing and ball retention, while Mbappé thrived on quick transitions and exploiting space with his pace.

This fundamental difference meant that the team could not simultaneously play to the strengths of both players. Pochettino said, "If we played for Messi, we could not play for Mbappé." He elaborated that when the team was behind and regained possession, Mbappé wanted the ball quickly to run into space, but this style clashed with the more measured approach Messi required. Mbappé himself reportedly expressed frustration, noting that although his strength was running, the tactical setup limited his ability to do so.

In contrast, Neymar's style was more compatible with both players, as he also preferred to play with the ball at his feet, facilitating link-up play. Despite this, Pochettino acknowledged the overall difficulty in harmonising the three stars' roles within a single system.

Despite these challenges, PSG enjoyed domestic success under Pochettino's leadership, securing the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions during the 2021/22 season. Nonetheless, the coach was dismissed at the end of that campaign, underscoring the high expectations and pressures at the club.

Looking ahead, PSG's tactical approach to integrating their top attacking talents remains a critical factor for their ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.
