Moroccan Federation President Comments on Lamine Yamal’s National Team Choice

Lamine Yamal, the promising young footballer born in Esplugues de Llobregat near Barcelona, has made the decision to represent Spain at the international level, despite his Moroccan ancestry on his father's side. This choice has drawn attention from the Moroccan national team, as highlighted in a recent interview with Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

Yamal, who is 18 years old and has already played for Spain's youth teams, carries the full name Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana but opts to use the first two names on his jersey. His Moroccan heritage comes from his father, Mounir Nasraoui, and the FRMF had reportedly made several efforts to persuade him to represent Morocco before he committed to Spain's senior team.

In the interview with Onze Mondial, Fouzi Lekjaa expressed respect for Yamal's decision, emphasizing that the federation has not contested his choice nor altered their relationship with him or his family. Lekjaa noted that Yamal’s family frequently visits Morocco, particularly the northern provinces, and will always be welcome there. Despite this respectful stance, Lekjaa made a pointed remark about the player's name, stating, "Lamine Jamel. I don’t know any Spaniard named Jamel," clarifying that the player’s actual name is Yamal.
