The 31-year-old player, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns under Miguel Cardoso, was shot at while driving in the Hillbrow neighborhood. According to local media, Lunga was heading to church with his younger brother when an unknown shooter opened fire on his vehicle. Apparently, the assailant mistook the footballer for an undercover police officer. Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko reported that a case of attempted murder is under investigation, but no arrests have been made so far. Crime is a serious issue in South Africa, a country that records one of the highest homicide rates in the world. Divine Lunga is a prominent figure in African football. The defender has 21 caps for the Zimbabwe national team and was recently called up for the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches. Since joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021, he has won four national league titles and, in May, his second African Champions League title. So far, neither the club nor the national team has officially commented on the incident. However, the Zimbabwe national team posted a photo of Lunga in a prayer position with the caption ‘In God we trust,’ followed by the player’s name.
