Italian Football Federation and Naples City Council Advance Diego Armando Maradona Stadium Renovation Ahead of Euro 2032
The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples is set for a major renovation to increase capacity and modernize facilities as Italy prepares to co-host Euro 2032 with Turkey.
The City Council of Naples, together with delegates from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), recently convened to evaluate the progress of the renovation project for the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. This initiative is part of preparations for Italy's co-hosting of the European Championship in 2032 alongside Turkey.
The meeting, held at Palazzo San Giacomo, focused on ensuring that the stadium upgrades would not disrupt the scheduling of upcoming matches. Edoardo Cosenza, the Infrastructure Councillor, provided an update on the project, highlighting key design elements and the use of advanced construction techniques.
The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, home to Napoli and a prominent Serie A venue, is undergoing significant modernization to meet UEFA standards and enhance the spectator experience. The renovation aims to increase the stadium's seating capacity from 54,000 to 70,000 by reopening the third tier and removing the athletics track to bring fans closer to the pitch. Additional improvements include expanding the roof, installing a video ring around the stadium, and creating new premium seating options such as sky boxes, field boxes, and VIP areas in the central stand.
One notable aspect of the project is the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM), a 3D virtual construction method that integrates various processes and technologies to improve precision and flexibility in design and execution. According to Councillor Cosenza, all seats will comply with UEFA's visibility requirements, ensuring an optimal viewing experience for attendees.
The municipality of Naples also unveiled the first images of the proposed renovations to the public, providing a visual representation of the planned enhancements. The entire project is budgeted at approximately 200 million euros, reflecting the scale and ambition of the upgrade.
Looking ahead, the successful completion of the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium renovation will position Naples as a key host city for Euro 2032, contributing to Italy's broader efforts to deliver world-class football infrastructure.
