World Cup South Korea – “They said I was involved with the fitness coach and that we escaped through the window”

Santiago Cañizares does not forget that life played a trick on him in 2002 when he was called up for the World Cup in South Korea and Japan, with the honor of being a starter, but ended up missing the tournament. The former goalkeeper joined the training camp in Jerez but was ultimately released due to a rather comical incident: he was barefoot in the bathroom when he dropped a bottle of cologne and instinctively tried to cushion the fall with his foot, resulting in the bottle breaking and a deep cut. “In the hospital, they were telling me ‘raise your finger’… I could only raise my eyebrows,” he recounted regarding the incident, not forgetting the theories that emerged at the time, including one suggesting a relationship with a member of the delegation. “They said I was involved with the fitness coach and that we escaped through the window,” Santi Cañizares commented with laughter on the Radio COPE program about the World Cup.
