Bernardo Silva Diogo Jota Em – [EN] Bernardo Silva remembers the moment he found out about Diogo Jota’s death

In an interview with The Athletic about his long career at Manchester City, Bernardo Silva opened up about the death of Diogo Jota, something that “was very difficult to accept”, and recalled the moment he learned the news, in July 2025, when he was playing in the Club World Cup in the United States.

Key details

«Diogo was a great friend of mine», shared Bernardo. «I was returning from the Club World Cup and, when I landed, I heard the news. It was so difficult to accept — not only Diogo, but also his brother [André Silva]. I was a family friend. It’s simply difficult”, admitted the midfielder.

Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva died in a car accident in Spain, on July 3, 2025. Two days earlier, Manchester City had been eliminated from the round of 16 of the Club World Cup by Al Hilal, 3-4. Bernardo Silva even scored in that game; on the other side, João Cancelo and Rúben Neves watched.

Ten months later, the loss continues to be felt. «I remember him every day, especially when I’m in the National Team», he explained, stating that this is a feeling of the entire group and they want to win the 2026 World Cup for him too.

“In all the moments we spent together in the Seleção — lunches, dinners, playing pool, playing cards — he is always in our minds. It’s difficult to play cards and not see him, because he was always there laughing with us. With the World Cup, we want to win it for the Portuguese people. We also want to keep Diogo’s memory very present. Whenever we are together, we will remember him, for sure”, he concluded.
