Cristiano Ronaldo Al Nassr – [EN] «Cristiano Ronaldo’s level has not dropped in Saudi Arabia»

Roberto Martínez, coach of the national team, categorically rejected the idea that Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to the Saudi league diminished his effectiveness at the service of the Portugal national team. Following a recent scouting trip to Riyadh, the Spanish coach praised the striker’s continued ambition and fitness as he prepares for another World Cup.

Key details

The 52-year-old coach was in Saudi Arabia to watch the 1-1 draw between Al Nassr and Al Hilal, on May 12, a Tuesday, which postponed the title celebration. The trip served to evaluate the performance of several Portuguese players, namely Rúben Neves, João Félix and, with special attention, the captain of the Seleção, Cristiano Ronaldo.

At 41, Ronaldo had a prolific season, scoring 26 goals and providing three assists, helping Al Nassr lead the Saudi League. In an interview with the German Press Agency (DPA), Martínez highlighted that the former Manchester United player remains a fundamental player for the corner team.

«Cristiano continues to have a great desire to win and I don’t see any sign that his level has dropped since he came to Saudi Arabia. He is playing exceptionally well and has proven his importance to the Portuguese national team. His passion continues, even after all the successes and achievements he has achieved, and having that hunger is remarkable», said the coach.

Despite the praise, Martínez made a point of remembering that Ronaldo’s status does not guarantee him a permanent place. The striker, like the other players, has to meet the high standards required.

«However, achievements alone are not enough to guarantee a place in the national team. It is also necessary to contribute to the success of the team. Although he is the captain and has achieved unprecedented success that demonstrates his exceptional talent, he has the same responsibilities as any other player on the national team.”
