Austria Secures German Talent Paul Wanner and English Youth Champion Carney Chukwuemeka for 2026 World Cup Squad
Austria has added two key players to its 2026 World Cup qualifying squad: Paul Wanner, a German-born winger with Bayern Munich and PSV experience, and Carney Chukwuemeka, an English youth international midfielder now at Borussia Dortmund.

Austria, having topped Group H in the qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has announced the inclusion of two notable players in its national team squad. The call-up features Paul Wanner, a highly regarded young winger with German footballing roots, and Carney Chukwuemeka, an English under-19 European champion, both of whom have chosen to represent Austria at senior international level.
Paul Wanner, aged 20, is currently playing for PSV Eindhoven and was a runner-up with Germany's under-21 team at the 2025 European Championship. Wanner's football journey is remarkable; he became the youngest player to debut for Bayern Munich's first team at just 16 years and 15 days old. Born in Austria but raised in Germany, Wanner was eligible to play for either nation and, after months of deliberation, opted to represent his country of birth, Austria.
Alongside Wanner, Austria has also secured the services of Carney Chukwuemeka, a 22-year-old central midfielder who recently completed a permanent transfer to Borussia Dortmund after a loan spell. Chukwuemeka, who was developed at Aston Villa, has an impressive youth international record with England, including 23 caps up to under-20 level and winning the under-19 European Championship in 2022. His decision to switch allegiance to Austria marks a significant development for the national team.
The addition of these two players is expected to bolster Austria's squad depth and quality as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup tournament. Both Wanner and Chukwuemeka bring valuable experience from top European clubs and youth international competitions, which could enhance Austria's competitiveness on the global stage.
Looking ahead, Austria will aim to integrate these new talents into the team dynamics under the guidance of coach Ralf Rangnick. Their next fixtures and preparations will be closely watched to assess how these players adapt and contribute. Meanwhile, the broader football community will observe how these international allegiance decisions impact the players' careers and Austria's prospects in the 2026 World Cup.
