Finalissima Cancelled Argentina Blames UEFA – Finalissima Cancelled: Argentina Blames UEFA for Making Match Against Spain Impossible

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) and CONMEBOL hold UEFA responsible for the cancellation of the Finalissima, which was set to pit Argentina against Spain, claiming that the European body refused an alternative date for the match. The game, which would have been the fourth edition of the trophy, was initially scheduled for March 27 in Doha. However, the conflict in the Middle East forced the search for a new location. Following UEFA's announcement that the match between the 2024 Copa America champions and the Euro winners would not take place, the Argentine and South American federations issued statements defending their position and pointing fingers at the organization that governs European football. As for a new location, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid emerged as the main alternative but was rejected, as was the idea of holding the match over two legs. In a statement, UEFA attributed the responsibility for the cancellation to Argentina. "This would have guaranteed a world-class venue suitable for such a prestigious event, but Argentina refused. The second option was to organize the Finalissima in two matches, one at the Bernabéu on March 27 and another in Buenos Aires during an international window before the Euro and the 2028 Copa America, always proposing a 50/50 split of fans at the Madrid stadium. This option was also rejected," read the note from the European body. In response, AFA and CONMEBOL justified their refusals, arguing that the first proposal violated sporting fairness. "It is evident that the approach of organizing a single game in Madrid would violate the principle of sporting equity, as it is not a NEUTRAL GROUND," clarified the Argentine federation. After discussing various locations, Italy was accepted by all parties as a solution. However, according to AFA, the deadlock arose over the date. "Argentina accepted the idea without objections, except regarding the date, suggesting March 31. Unfortunately, UEFA communicated that the game on the 31st, just four days after the initial proposal, was not possible, and the Finalissima was canceled," accused AFA, which did not provide any justification for rejecting the two-legged format. With the cancellation, Spain has already found a substitute opponent and will face Serbia on March 27. Meanwhile, Argentina is now considering two options: finding a new opponent for the FIFA date or conducting a ten-day training camp in Ezeiza, their training center, and looking for a local opponent.
