It’s official! Xabi Alonso is Chelsea’s new coach. The announcement was made this Sunday morning by the club, which confirmed that the Spaniard had signed a contract for the next four seasons.
Key details
The English press had already guaranteed last Saturday that the agreement was closed and it didn’t take long for it to be made official. The former Bayer Leverkusen player is therefore returning to the Premier League, in which he represented Liverpool as a player, after leaving Real Madrid in January.
Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Manager of the Men’s Team. The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Welcome to Chelsea, Xabi!
«Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and I feel immense pride in becoming coach of this great club. From the conversations I had with the ownership group and the sporting management, it was clear that we shared the same ambition”, he began by explaining the choice, in statements to the club.
«We want to build a team capable of consistently competing at the highest level and fighting for trophies. There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club, and it will be a great honor for me to lead it. Now, the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies,” he added.
In London, Xabi Alonso will meet three Portuguese players: Pedro Neto and Dário Essugo, already in the squad, and also Geovany Quenda, who will leave Sporting at the end of the season.
