Wayne Rooney is a man of his word. The former England striker fulfilled the promise he made during the 2026 World Cup and rowed on the Hudson River in New York, accompanied by Joe Hart and Micah Richards, fellow commentators from BBC Sport. It all started in the round of 16 of the tournament when the former Manchester United star promised to row on the Mersey River if Norway defeated Brazil. The Nordic team achieved the feat, defeating the Brazilian team 2-1, and the former player confirmed live that he would honor the commitment, although the challenge was moved to the United States. The trio swapped microphones for oars and ventured into the waters of the Hudson River. “I loved it. The fans were fantastic. We did it out of respect for them,” Rooney stated. The promise gained notoriety, especially after the Viking-style rowing of Norwegian fans became a sensation during the FIFA tournament. Even Erling Haaland made sure to remind Rooney of the commitment. “Wayne, I hope you go for a rowing boat ride,” the player said at the time. It is worth noting that Norway was eventually eliminated by England in the quarter-finals of the competition.
