Lyon is facing a lawsuit amounting to approximately €54 million due to the transfer of Brazilian forward Igor Jesus, who, interestingly, never played for the French team. The case adds pressure to the finances and management model of the French club, coached by Paulo Fonseca. The action was filed in London by a fund associated with the private credit manager MC Credit Partners. The lawsuit demands the payment of around €37 million in principal debt, plus €5 million in penalties for default and accumulated interest at a considered high rate. The dispute originated from a transfer operation between Lyon and Botafogo, both clubs owned by the Eagle Football Holdings group, where American businessman John Textor was the main figure before being dismissed. The French club reportedly failed to make the first installment payment of the agreement, which was scheduled for November of last year. According to the documentation of the lawsuit, the initial contract, signed in October 2024, stipulated the transfer of Igor Jesus for €35 million, to be paid in two installments. The initial payment, which was supposed to occur days after the signing, was not made. Subsequently, Botafogo sought to expedite the receipt of the amounts through a credit fund, assigning the rights over the debt. In December 2024, the contract was restructured, with Lyon committing to pay the equivalent of €36 million in three annual installments until 2027. However, the default on the first installment led the fund to resort to the courts to demand the total amount of the operation. According to the lawsuit, Lyon did not regularize the situation within 30 days after the due date, and Igor Jesus ended up moving to Nottingham Forest last summer, with Botafogo receiving €19 million for that sale. This episode highlights the vulnerabilities of the multi-club ownership model in football, where the same group controls several clubs and conducts internal transfers. In this context, assets such as players and transfer rights are often used as collateral in financial operations. Furthermore, Lyon's financial situation is delicate, as the club has recently been at risk of administrative relegation due to financial losses and high indebtedness. Amid this crisis, businesswoman Michele Kang took over the presidency of the club last year, replacing John Textor.
