Pablo Longoria Roberto De Zerbi – It’s official: even the president of Marseille couldn’t withstand the crisis

Marseille confirmed on Monday that Pablo Longoria is no longer the president of the club, a position he held since February 2021, after a brief stint as sporting director. The club acknowledges the commitment, passion, and work done by Pablo Longoria over the past six years in service of the club. The club sincerely wishes him all the success in this new stage of his career. Pablo Longoria thanks Marseille for the trust placed in him and expresses deep gratitude to the entire coaching staff, players, and fans who were part of this journey. The 39-year-old Spaniard is yet another victim of the leadership crisis that has plagued the club this year. It all began with the departure of coach Roberto De Zerbi in February, followed by the exit of sporting director Medhi Benatia; however, two days later, he returned to the position until the end of the season. The Spaniard became one of the youngest presidents in Ligue 1 history, taking the helm of a club that he helped regularly qualify for the Champions League, finishing 8th in the league in the 2023/24 season. However, his departure from the Marseille emblem had been anticipated since February, after the club’s owner, Frank Mc Court, brought back Medhi Benatia and limited Longoria’s decision-making power, relegating him to a more institutional role representing Marseille in various football organizations, such as the French Football League and the European Club Association (ECA). On the field, the club, now coached by Habib Beye, continues to fight for direct qualification to the Champions League – which means aiming for 3rd place in Ligue 1 – alongside Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon and Lille, both of which are three points behind Marseille.
