Kieran Tierney Arsenal – Broke his jaw and lost teeth, but came back from hospital to celebrate

Kieran Tierney, with an incredible kick in added time, was decisive in Scotland’s 4-2 victory against Denmark. The Scots then secured their passport to the final stage of a World Cup, 28 years later.

Key details

The left-back returned to Celtic in the summer after several seasons with Arsenal, having spent one season (2023/24) on loan at Real Sociedad. Physical problems prevented him from reaching a higher level, but it is certain that he regained his good form and great moments with his return home.

It was with the Scottish team that Tierney stood out in the world of football. In 2017, the defender was linked to a curious and… painful story.

Tierney started in the Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Aberdeen, but had to be substituted in the first half after taking an elbow and seriously injuring himself. The scenes were frightening: Tierney suffered a fractured jaw, lost two teeth and was rushed off the field on a stretcher, with his mouth covered in blood. The player was immediately transported to the hospital, where he would theoretically undergo surgery.

However, it was a different story and Tierney was rushed out of hospital and joined the Scottish Cup final celebrations with his Celtic team-mates… despite suffering a broken jaw and missing teeth.

«Honestly, I couldn’t even feel anything, I took so much anesthetic. But it was practically a fairy tale. I had just arrived at the stadium and saw that the trophy hadn’t been lifted yet. I started running and went up the stairs,” he said, in an interview with The Herald.
