World Cup: Ghana Midfielder Thomas Partey Denied Entry to Canada Amid Legal Allegations

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has been denied entry into Canada ahead of his national team's opening World Cup fixture against Panama. This decision stems from ongoing legal issues, specifically rape and sexual assault allegations he faces in London, which have led Canadian authorities to refuse his visa application.

Thomas Partey, 32, currently plays for Villarreal and was called up to represent Ghana in the World Cup. The team established its training base in Rhode Island, USA, before traveling to North America for the tournament. Despite traveling with the squad to the United States, Partey was unable to cross the border into Canada, where Ghana's first group match against Panama is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 17, at BMO Field in Toronto.

The visa denial was officially confirmed by FIFA in a statement to The Athletic, which clarified that Partey would not be able to travel from the Ghana team’s training camp in Boston to Canada for the match. This development means that Ghana will have to proceed without one of their key midfielders for their opening game in the tournament.

Thomas Partey is currently facing serious legal challenges. He has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The initial six charges, involving three women, reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2022, with Partey maintaining his innocence. In February of this year, two additional charges involving a fourth woman and incidents dating back to 2020 were brought forward, to which Partey also pleaded not guilty in April.

Despite this setback, there remains a possibility for Partey to participate in Ghana's remaining group stage matches, as these fixtures are scheduled to take place in the United States. Ghana’s subsequent games include a match against England on June 23 in Boston and another against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia, both part of Group L.
