Jarell Quansah admitted that his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen was a career gamble that ultimately paid off with his call-up to the 2026 World Cup. The 23-year-old player left Liverpool, his boyhood club, for the German side last summer in a €40 million transfer, aiming to play more regularly and thus increase his chances of representing England. The gamble proved to be a wise one. Quansah not only became a key player for coach Thomas Tuchel but also gained experience in the UEFA Champions League and secured a spot in the World Cup squad. “Last summer, it was a very difficult decision, to be honest, to leave the club of my heart, a club where I have been my whole life. But I knew it was the best for my career, to be able to play every week,” the defender confessed to the English press while in training in the USA. “Those who know me understand that I believe in myself regardless of everything, and I feel capable of playing at the highest level, and I wanted to show that this season. Being rewarded with a selection for the World Cup is an absolute honor and is due to the hard work I have put in over the last 12 months,” he stated. His versatility is one of his greatest assets, as he is capable of playing in various positions in the defensive sector, both as a right-back and a center-back. However, Quansah emphasizes that his development is not solely due to leaving Liverpool but rather the experience he has been accumulating. “I feel that with every game I play, I am improving. I am young, so as long as I keep my head in the right place and continue to work hard, I know I will be in a good position,” he explained, adding that the experience in the Champions League was “huge” for his development.
