After complex financial negotiations, according to the Brazilian press, Dorival Júnior was made official as the new coach of São Paulo, with a contract valid until the end of this season. The agreement was sealed this Friday morning, at a meeting in Florianópolis.

The talks, which began on Thursday and continued into the early hours, were close to an impasse due to financial issues. Dorival’s technical committee wanted a value close to the 3 million reais (around 500 thousand euros) he earned at Corinthians, while the tricolor emblem offered 1.5 million (around 250 thousand euros), the same as what it paid to Hernán Crespo. Both parties had to give in, reaching a consensus for a value of around 2 million reais (around 344 thousand euros).
The management of the Brasileirão club may have felt pessimistic during the first meeting. Before discussing the financial aspect, Dorival Júnior was very concerned about the club’s political context, having been informed at length about the behind the scenes, the financial situation and the short, medium and long term projects.
The financial agreement was only reached on Friday morning. After the initial impasse, Dorival sent a new proposal, to which the management, after consulting president Harry Massis, responded with a counter-proposal that changed only small details, which was promptly accepted by the coach.
Dorival Júnior, who was the club’s main priority since Roger Machado’s departure, will watch the game against Fluminense, in Rio de Janeiro, this Saturday. However, the team will still be led by members of São Paulo’s fixed technical committee.
