Iran Brought Tension World Cup – Iran Brought Tension to the World Cup, but Also a Great Game

World Cup Iran and New Zealand played to an exciting 2-2 draw at So Fi Stadium in Los Angeles, one of the best matches of the World Cup so far – once again a clash that took place in the early hours, as is often the case in World Cups. Just scored twice for the Oceania team and immediately entered the history of New Zealand, while Rezaeian and Mohebi scored for the Iranians, and Chris Wood shone with two assists. The famous Tim Payne, well-remembered by fans on dozens of t-shirts, was more subdued. The Group G match was shrouded in controversy even before the initial whistle due to Iran’s presence in the competition and the logistical problems stemming from the ongoing war in the territory with the United States. Due to government restrictions, the team moved its headquarters to Mexico and was recently prevented from staying on U.S. soil, having to travel to Tijuana, Mexico, 225 kilometers away. There were protests from Iranian citizens outside the stadium against the political regime imposed in the country, clearly visible as they waved the lion and sun flag, a symbol of the country until the Islamic revolution of 1979. The atmosphere in the stands was tense, with many Iranian refugees present who booed the national anthem – while the players sang it – reflecting the social division in the country. As for the game, New Zealand took the lead early on, in the 7th minute. After an initial warning from Iran by Yousefi, goalkeeper Crocombe launched the ball to Chris Wood. The Nottingham Forest forward skillfully controlled it and assisted Just, who with a powerful shot scored New Zealand’s first goal in a World Cup in 16 years. The Asian team struggled to respond. Former FC Porto player Mehdi Taremi hit the post, Ghoddos shot wide, but Iranian persistence paid off in the 32nd minute. Right-back Rezaeian initiated and concluded the play, taking advantage of a rebound after a shot from Moghanloo to equalize the match. Before halftime, Iran saw a goal from Nemati disallowed for offside. Upon resumption, the intensity did not decrease. In the 54th minute, the same New Zealand duo struck again: Chris Wood assisted and Just scored again, putting his team back in the lead. The young Motherwell player became, in just one game, the all-time top scorer for his country in World Cups. However, Iran did not give up and equalized 10 minutes later. Rezaeian delivered an exquisite cross to Mohebi’s head, and the forward responded with a precise header, restoring parity and once again making the right-back a central figure in the game. With all teams in Group G tied on one point, they will play again on Sunday: Belgium faces Iran in Los Angeles, while New Zealand takes on Egypt in Vancouver, Canada.
