Iran's participation in the upcoming World Cup remains uncertain, as the country's football federation is still seeking to move its matches from the U.S. to Mexico, citing security reasons. According to a statement from the Iranian embassy in Mexico, the president of the Federation, Mehdi Taj, is already in talks with FIFA. The reason is related to the tense situation in the Middle East and concerns about the safety of the delegation on American soil. Mehdi Taj was emphatic in his recent statements, quoted by the embassy's account on X: "Given that (U.S. President Donald) Trump has clearly stated that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we certainly will not go to the United States." He added, "We are negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran's World Cup matches in Mexico." On Saturday, Iran's Minister of Sports, Ahmad Donyamali, stated that the proposal would be analyzed together with FIFA. Iran is placed in Group G and has three matches scheduled on American soil: two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle, against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. The team's training center during the tournament is planned for Tucson, Arizona, which would also need to be changed, creating a logistical nightmare for the organization. Iran's ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, denounced "the lack of cooperation from the U.S. government in issuing visas and providing logistical support" to the Iranian delegation. He also confirmed that he himself "suggested to FIFA that Iran's matches be moved from the United States to Mexico."
