FA Suspends Preston Midfielder Jordan Thompson for Three Matches After Bottle Incident

Preston North End midfielder Jordan Thompson has been handed a three-match suspension by the Football Association (FA) following an incident in which he kicked a water bottle that struck a fan in the stands. The disciplinary action comes after the FA charged Thompson with violent conduct.

The incident took place during Preston's away match against Norwich City at Carrow Road last Saturday, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for Preston. Thompson, 29, was substituted in the 65th minute and while making his way to the bench, he kicked a water bottle towards the stands. The bottle subsequently hit a spectator in the head. Although Thompson appeared to apologise by raising his hand, the match referee, Gavin Ward, did not witness the incident during the game.

Despite the lack of in-match disciplinary action, the FA reviewed the incident and charged Thompson with violent conduct. Following a hearing before an independent Regulatory Commission, the charge was upheld. The commission imposed the standard punishment of a three-match suspension. Thompson denied the charge, but the evidence was deemed sufficient to confirm the sanction.

This suspension will rule Thompson out of Preston's next three Championship fixtures against Stoke City, Leicester City, and Queens Park Rangers. Preston currently sit 17th in the Championship table, holding a 10-point buffer above the relegation zone with eight matches remaining in the season. Thompson's absence could impact the club's efforts to secure safety and improve their league standing.

Jordan Thompson joined Preston North End in the summer following the expiration of his contract with Stoke City. However, he only made his debut for Preston in November due to ankle surgery. Since then, he has featured in 16 matches. Thompson's football development includes time in the Manchester United academy, and he has previously played for clubs such as Rangers and Blackpool.
