Jude Bellingham Joins Tom Brady as Investor in Birmingham Phoenix Cricket Team

Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid midfielder and England international, has taken a 1.2% ownership stake in the Birmingham Phoenix cricket team. This investment, valued at nearly one million euros, is set to be officially confirmed shortly.

The Birmingham Phoenix are one of eight franchises competing in the innovative cricket tournament known as The Hundred. The team is based at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Last year, the franchise was partially sold to new investors, with the American investment firm Knighthead Capital Management acquiring a 49% share for approximately 46 million euros. Knighthead Capital Management also owns Birmingham City Football Club, a team where Bellingham previously played before his transfer to Real Madrid. The remaining 51% of the cricket team is held by Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

As part of the new ownership arrangement, Bellingham has purchased 0.6% stakes from both Knighthead Capital Management and Warwickshire, resulting in a combined 1.2% share. This transaction adjusts the ownership structure slightly, with Warwickshire retaining a majority control of 50.4% of the franchise.

Bellingham's interest in cricket is well documented. The 22-year-old footballer has been a cricket enthusiast since his youth, having played at the Hagley Cricket Club in Worcestershire. His admiration for the sport was highlighted in an interview last year when he expressed a desire to swap places with Ben Stokes, the captain of the England cricket team, underscoring his passion for the game beyond football.

Adding to the significance of this investment is the involvement of Tom Brady, the legendary NFL quarterback, who is also part of the Knighthead Capital Management investor group. This cross-sport investment highlights a growing trend of athletes diversifying their portfolios and engaging with sports outside their primary disciplines.
