Dominic Thiem, former number three in the world rankings and winner of the 2020 US Open, took an unexpected turn in his sporting life after retiring from professional tennis at the end of 2024. The 32-year-old former Austrian tennis player officially signed with Badener AC, a club that competes in the 2nd Klasse Triestingtal, corresponding to the eighth division of football in Austria, fulfilling his passion for the king sport.

The move to the team from the Lower Austria region was driven by friendship with one of the players on the squad, but the experience on the pitch is not an absolute debut for Thiem. Before this new stage, the former Austrian champion had already played ten official matches and scored one goal for SC Lichtenwörth, a club from his homeland.

Despite his elite resume in world tennis, Thiem will not be entitled to perks. The Badener AC sports structure was keen to point out that the athlete’s past on the big stages of the ATP circuit does not guarantee him a place in the starting team, so he will have to earn his place in training like any other player. Away from the pressure and demands of high-performance sport, Thiem now embraces this new phase motivated exclusively by the pleasure of playing and competing as a team.
