Argentine Football Association Claudio Tapia – Scandal in Argentina: Federation President Formally Accused of Tax Evasion

Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), has been formally accused of tax evasion, according to a decision from the Argentine judiciary released this Monday, in a case involving several officials from the current world champions. According to the criminal charges filed by local authorities, the AFA and some of its officials are accused of tax evasion and false contributions to social security, resulting in an estimated loss of 19 billion pesos (approximately 11.8 million euros). In addition to Claudio Tapia, four other AFA officials have been named as defendants, along with the federation itself, which is being prosecuted as a legal entity. The AFA contests the accusations, claiming that the case is a maneuver orchestrated by Argentine President Javier Milei to pressure Argentine football. The ultraliberal leader wants football clubs, currently structured as non-profit associations, to become publicly traded corporations. In opposition to the government's plan, the clubs went on strike during the ninth round of the first division championship, originally scheduled for earlier this month. The AFA is also the subject of a separate investigation since 2017 for alleged money laundering.
