Olympic Stadium Stadio Olimpico – Lazio prepares to swap the Olympic Stadium for an… abandoned stadium

Lazio has taken a decisive step towards leaving the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and building its own home. The Italian club has submitted complete documentation for the renovation of the Stadio Flaminio, an abandoned venue since 2011, in a project estimated at around 445 million euros. The announcement was made by the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, who confirmed the receipt of the formal proposal from the club. "We can also give another piece of news: precisely today Lazio submitted the complete documentation to initiate the procedure for the new stadium, which will now be examined. It is an important step," Gualtieri stated. The mayor described the proposal as "a beautiful project that will need to be analyzed in detail," expressing satisfaction with the start of the administrative process. However, the submission of the documentation does not mean that construction will begin immediately. The plan calls for an increase in the stadium's capacity from the current 24,000 to 50,000 spectators. Since the venue is classified as heritage, the existing stands will be preserved but elevated through a steel structure, which will increase the height from 17 to 40 meters. The project also includes the revitalization of the entire surrounding area. To finance the work, the Lazio emblem will take out a loan of 288 million euros to be paid over 30 years, complemented by a personal investment of 87 million euros and a public incentive of 25 million euros. It is worth noting that the Stadio Flaminio, which in the past hosted important rugby competitions, has been unused for over a decade. With this project, Lazio is preparing to end the shared use of the Stadio Olimpico with its rival, Roma. The construction of the new arena is expected to take three years to complete after it begins.
