Erik ten Hag Reflects on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Impact and Broken Promises at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has publicly stated that Cristiano Ronaldo let Manchester United down during their time together, shedding new light on the challenges faced during his managerial tenure. The former United boss, who managed the club from April 2022 until October 2024, pointed to the deteriorating relationship with Ronaldo as a significant issue that affected team dynamics.

Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in August 2021, predating Ten Hag’s arrival as manager. However, tensions quickly escalated between the two, culminating in a notable incident in October 2022 when Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute during a Premier League victory over Tottenham. This act strained relations further, and shortly after, Ronaldo publicly criticized the club in a televised interview, deepening the divide.

Following these events, Ronaldo and Manchester United mutually agreed to terminate his contract in November 2022. Ten Hag’s recent remarks highlight his belief that Ronaldo’s attitude and decisions during this period were detrimental to the squad, marking one of the most candid criticisms from a former United manager regarding the Portuguese star.

Beyond his comments on Ronaldo, Ten Hag revealed that unfulfilled promises from the club’s ownership played a crucial role in his eventual dismissal in October 2024. Although he did not disclose specific details, his statements suggest a disconnect between his vision for the team and the support provided by the club’s hierarchy.

Ten Hag’s time at Manchester United was characterized by efforts to rebuild the squad and implement a distinct playing style. Yet, his departure left the club in search of stability amid ongoing challenges. The disclosure of broken commitments from the owners adds further context to the difficulties he encountered.

Looking forward, Manchester United faces the task of addressing the lingering issues from the Ten Hag era. The club’s upcoming fixtures will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike, assessing the progress under current management and whether lessons have been learned from past conflicts involving high-profile figures such as Ronaldo.
