Florian Wirtz Struggles to Recapture Bayer Leverkusen Form at Liverpool

Florian Wirtz’s transition from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool has been marked by inconsistency, leaving fans and analysts puzzled about why the German forward has not yet found his best form in the Premier League. Despite flashes of brilliance, Wirtz’s performances have fallen short of expectations tied to his £116 million transfer fee.

The 23-year-old German midfielder joined Liverpool ahead of the 2026/27 season amid high hopes. Known for his creativity and sharp attacking instincts at Leverkusen, Wirtz was expected to be a key figure in Jürgen Klopp’s squad competing in both the Premier League and Champions League.

His time at Liverpool has been a mixed bag. In the recent Champions League match against LASK, Wirtz showcased his potential by exploiting defensive gaps and playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s dominant victory. His ability to find space and link up play was reminiscent of the form that made him a standout at Leverkusen.

However, the contrast was stark in Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City. Faced with the absence of key teammates, Wirtz was less effective, appearing withdrawn and wasteful in a game where Liverpool needed him to step up. This underwhelming performance was highlighted by the fact that Rayan Cherki, a more affordable option Liverpool had considered but ultimately passed on, scored a decisive goal for City.

The £116 million price tag has undoubtedly increased the scrutiny on Wirtz, with some critics perhaps being overly harsh. Yet, the expectation remains that he should be able to translate his Bundesliga and international form into consistent Premier League performances. Liverpool’s tactical setup and the physical demands of English football may be factors influencing his adaptation period.

Looking ahead, Wirtz’s next opportunity to prove his worth will come in Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League fixtures, where the team will rely on him to contribute more decisively. With Klopp’s guidance and time to settle, there is still confidence that Wirtz can fulfill the promise that justified his hefty transfer fee.
