Tottenham Struggle with Fitness After Gruelling World Cup and Pre-Season Tour

Tottenham Hotspur continue to face fitness issues as the effects of a taxing summer linger, with several players still struggling to reach peak physical condition. Manager Roberto De Zerbi highlighted the problem after the team's 3-0 defeat to Brentford, noting that key players, including new signings Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Sandro Tonali, are not yet at the required level.

Jan Paul van Hecke's summer illustrates the challenge perfectly. The Dutch midfielder joined Spurs from Brighton for a substantial £52 million on 18 June. Shortly after, he was involved in the World Cup, where the Netherlands were eliminated in the last 32 following a penalty shootout loss to Morocco on 30 June. Barely recovering from the tournament, Van Hecke immediately joined Tottenham's pre-season tour to New Zealand and Australia starting 23 July, leaving him with little rest before the new campaign.

Van Hecke himself acknowledged the intensity of his summer, stating, "It was a really short break, to be honest. But I didn’t want to miss anything in the pre-season. My first days [as a Spurs player] were in New Zealand and Australia." This rapid turnaround has contributed to his and other players' sluggish starts to the season.

Although Tottenham managed a comfortable win against Charlton, the upcoming fixtures promise to be more challenging. Newcastle United, in particular, are expected to test Spurs' fitness and cohesion as the Premier League season progresses. The squad's current condition raises concerns about their ability to compete effectively across all competitions.

Roberto De Zerbi's remarks after the Brentford defeat underline the urgency for Spurs to find solutions to their fitness woes. The club's extensive summer commitments, including the World Cup and the arduous pre-season tour, have clearly taken a toll on the players' physical readiness.

Looking ahead, Tottenham will need to manage their squad carefully to avoid further setbacks. The next Premier League matches will be crucial in determining whether Spurs can overcome these early-season fitness challenges and establish consistency in a demanding campaign.
