Alessia Russo’s Penalty Secures Arsenal Comeback Win Over Tottenham in WSL Derby

Alessia Russo’s second-half penalty proved decisive as Arsenal came from behind to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in a rain-soaked Women’s Super League north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The win marked Arsenal’s second of the 2026 WSL season, providing much-needed momentum after a difficult start.

Tottenham took an early lead through Cathinka Tandberg’s headed goal, putting Arsenal on the back foot in challenging weather conditions. Despite the early setback, Arsenal showed resilience and tactical discipline, with Georgia Stanway equalising before halftime to restore parity and boost the visitors’ confidence.

In the second half, Arsenal were awarded a penalty under contentious circumstances, which Russo confidently converted to give the Gunners the lead. This goal proved to be the turning point, allowing Arsenal to take control of the match and withstand Tottenham’s efforts to respond despite the intense atmosphere and persistent rain.

The victory is a crucial one for Arsenal, who had struggled earlier in the campaign and needed a positive result to reset their season. The win keeps them within reach of the league leaders and demonstrates their ability to respond under pressure in a fiercely competitive WSL.

Tottenham, meanwhile, will rue conceding after taking the lead on home turf. The defeat highlights the tight competition in the league, where every point is hard earned. Both teams will look to build on this encounter as the season progresses, aiming to improve consistency and challenge for higher positions.

Looking ahead, Arsenal will seek to maintain this upward trajectory in their upcoming fixtures, hoping to turn this hard-fought victory into a platform for further success. The outcome of this north London derby adds extra motivation for the squad and coaching staff to sustain their form in the tightly contested league.
