The operation, dubbed ‘Operation Red Card,’ was launched during the tournament and resulted in the blocking of domains mostly based in Colombia — 1,140 sites. Following Colombia were Brazil with 309 domains, the Dominican Republic with 256, Peru with 28, and Argentina with 14. In a statement, Deputy Attorney General A. Tysen Duva emphasized the authorities’ commitment to protecting intellectual property: ‘The ongoing effort to seize over 1,000 domains dedicated to the illegal streaming of the World Cup confirms the government’s commitment to intellectual property rights and the success of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.’ This initiative, stemming from an investigation led by the Washington office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), through its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division and the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, also included search and seizure operations in Colombia aimed at combating the counterfeiting of sports merchandise, which culminated in the arrest of eleven individuals.
