Freiburg Move Top of Bundesliga with Late Win Over Schalke in Ten-Man Display

Freiburg have taken the top spot in the Bundesliga after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Schalke 04 on Sunday, despite being reduced to ten men. The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when Keisuke Goto netted the winner, securing a crucial three points for the club.

Freiburg’s win extends their remarkable start to the 2026-27 Bundesliga season. Prior to this match, they had already set a club record by accumulating 10 points from their first four games. With this latest victory, Freiburg now sit on 13 points, narrowly edging Borussia Dortmund on goal difference to claim first place in the league.

The match was notable not only for the late winner but also for Freiburg’s resilience in playing with ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team managed to hold off Schalke’s attempts to level the score, demonstrating strong defensive organization and determination.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, the reigning champions, remain in third place after a 2-2 draw with Augsburg on Saturday. Bayern’s inability to secure a win allowed Freiburg to leapfrog them in the standings, adding further excitement to the title race early in the campaign.

Freiburg’s rise to the top marks a significant shift in the Bundesliga hierarchy this season. Their strong performances suggest they could be genuine contenders, challenging the traditional dominance of Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. The club's ability to grind out results even when a player is sent off highlights their growing maturity and tactical discipline under their current management.

Looking ahead, Freiburg will aim to maintain their momentum in the coming fixtures as they face a series of challenging opponents. Their position at the summit puts extra pressure on the squad to sustain high performance levels, while Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich will be eager to respond and reclaim their places at the top.

For Schalke, the defeat is a setback in their campaign, and they will need to regroup quickly to avoid slipping further down the table. Overall, this result adds fresh intrigue to the Bundesliga title race as the season progresses.
